I have Oracle 8, 8i, and 9i databases on mixture of operating systems. Software must be able to backup all of my databases from a central location. Software must be able to work with ADSM devices.

I prefer software that can do block-level incremental backups. It doesn't matter what operating system this software runs on, as long as it can backup the databases which run on any operating system.

Thanks in advance,
-Mark

Not sure about ADSM devices, but have you looked at RMAN?

Yes, thank you. I had used RMAN previously, and I got re-acquainted with it while studying for OCP exam #3. I did not like it in Oracle8i or 9iR1, but I do like it in 9iR2. My customer is a govt agency that does not like to use too many products from the same vendor, and is discouraging my review of RMAN since we are already using the database, OEM, and other Oracle software already. Also, there are ADSM modules that works with RMAN - very expensive. Raises the cost of RMAN from $free to $same as competitors.

Hi, A classic government concept..Why use products that were designed to work together? Instead we'll try other companies hoping they can patch something together..

Unfortunately, it's not just the government.

My employer spent several years and great, bloody hunks of money buying "best of class" products, even though we already had the equivilent functionality already available in other products. When we finally reached a critical point where many of the "best of class" products could share information, the decision-makers finally started listening!

Assinine? You bet!
But it happened, and a lot of people got paid a lot of money for making horrid, expensive decisions.
