Hi ,

Has anyone come across a problem in windows 2k with the "enable plain text password" setting keeps resetting itself?

I am using w2k pro, with office 2000, IE5.5 SP1, and novell client 32 ver 4.8sp1. I use unix drives hence need the plain text password setting enabled. after a while it just resets itself to disabled for no apparent reason. Aaaaahghhh!

Thanks in advance for any tips.

You are using Samba to shere to Windows right? Do you have samba set for user level security or share level security? If you use share level security then you dont need to worry about the plaintext passwords. Let me know how you are set up.

Hi there,

Thanks for posting a reply to my forum question. The version of samba we are using is 1.9.18p8 set with user level security. For other reasons we are not planning to upgrade the version just yet. Does this info help?

I have my suspicions about the netware client, resetting the plain text password setting. another thing is that the pc has two network cards of which only one is being used.

Thanks

AK

Try setting the user level security to share level security. Using Share level you will not need to worry about plain text passwords. James Collins

Hi

Don't know if this is of any use but here goes. This really depends on HOW you set the clients to use plain text passwords in the first place. If you have not tried this method it may be worth a try...

We have Win 2000 Pro clients connecting to a Samba server. At first their passwords were not validated by the Samba server so I had to enable plain text passwords. An article in Microsoft TechNet outlined an error, basically the Samba server would not accept the plain text password from the Win 2000 pcs. The solution was a simple correction to the registry and a client PC restart. Since then all the clients connect to the Samba server without problems.

Below is an extract from the TechNet article (Q224287) which includes the registry change. Hope this is of use!

SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to connect to a third-party SMB server, such as DEC Pathworks
or Samba, you may receive the following error message:

System error 1240 has occurred.

The account is not authorized to login from this station.

CAUSE
=====

This issue can occur if the non-Microsoft SMB server supports only unencrypted
(plain text) passwords during authentication.

RESOLUTION
==========

To enable unencrypted passwords, add the following value and data value to the
following registry key:

Value Name: EnablePlainTextPassword
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1

Registry Key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters
