Ping occasionally times out to Exchange 5.5 Server

We have a problem with our Exchange servers. When I run a constant ping on them it occasionally "request times out". On one particular server I have changed the NIC and the port it is plugged in to. The time outs seem to increase when I delete lots of emails from a mailbox on that server.
As normal users are complaining that their "email is slow".
Can anyone tell me if this is a know problem with Mirosoft Exchange or do I need to look elsewhere?

Start with the physical connections first. Is you exchange server using fiber to connect to a switch or Cat 5? We had a bad port on our switch that was the culprit for a similar problem. It was dropping packets continually. Do you have enough bandwidth etc...Basically what Dan said, check you network from the physical layer on up.

I have changed the switch port the server is plugged into and the NIC.

However it seems to be happening with all of our Exchange servers. Some are based at completely different buildings.

I will run some test on the network though.
