I have a weird problem. I have a Cisco router at one of my remote branches that routes back to my main branch Cisco router via serial t1. The problem is I cannot ping anything on the main branch network through the remote branch router. I can however ping the main branch router without problems from the remote router just nothing else at the main site. The strange issue is I can ping from a PC on the remote site to a pc in the main site. I just can’t ping from the remote router. Any ideas? TIA S

PS: This router and connection has been up for years without any problems and now we are having this problem.

If you can ping from a remote PC to a main site PC but you cannot ping a main site PC from your remote router then I would check to see if you have any access lists in place that may have changed recently. Routing is *probably* fine since the remote PCs can reach the main site PCs.

Check your ACLs and let us know if that is the problem. If not, let us know and we'll take another crack at it.

That is correct I can ping from a remote site PC to main site pc or router, but not from remote router to main site pc. I can ping from remote router to main router. I do not have any ACL's currently. Should I?

You don't need ACLs unless you want to block certain types of traffic. That is usually the most likely explanation for the type of behavior you're experiencing.

Try doing a traceroute to a main site PC from your remote router so we can get an idea of where the packets are being dropped.

Also, can you post the relevant portions of your router configs, e.g. interfaces, routing protocols, etc.?
