Pick List - 4100 Records

We have a web page where the users assign CAS numbers to a product. The page contains a pick list of CAS numbers with over 4100 recs. The problem we have is that some of our user group are on a dial-up connection and the page load takes forever.

Does anyone have any suggestions how we can make the page load faster.

1) you could load the most common CAS numbers. put a link below the select that reads something like "See full list of CAS" numbers. have a pop up box appear with a hyperlinked list of all cas numbers. add the selected link to the select

2) let them manualy enter a cas number into a text box.

3) do like number 1 except instead of a pop up box it reloads the page with a full list in the select box.

4)leave off the closing </option> tag. bad practice but less to download.


maybe someone else has ideas for 5 and up.

I was considering number 2. After the user enters them in the text box and presses the submit button. Do a validation on the server side to make sure that the CAS number exists in the table.
