Hey guys,

I really hope you can help me out here, ive recently had broadband fitted, and my question is, how can i make phone calls from my pc via the wireless broadband connection that i have?

I have had a look on the internet, and so far ive only come across services which i have to pay for, id like to make calls using the exsisting bt line that i have, but on my pc.

All suggestions and help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

hey thanks for that LloydSev, ...but even this requires payments for phones to numbers which dnt have the software installed...surely there has to be a way to make calls from my exisiting phone line via the broadband connection

ah :(

Thanks for the link thou! appreciate it

i know the answer to this one... you neead a voip system added to your pc voip(voice over internet protocol) is a
device like a hub which you connect to the pc via a hispeed or dsl connection.. you need the device with all the eithernet cables then ghook your phone up to the system.. you will need the PSP ( voip service provider) to be activated to use the system......zxor38

Yeah, other than Skype you will need the pay.. to use your current # you would need to pay for VoIP

thats a damn shame, i was hoping on calling from my pc and prank calling some of my mates with sound boards that ive managed to get hold of, and record the conversations and make a compilation. It seems i shall have to adhere to different approaches in conquest of my humourous adventures.

You might look at Vonage or AT&T advantage.

This is where prior planning would have helped. They make routers now with the IP Phone built into them but they are just more expensive. Generally this takes some device that goes between the Internet router and the phone or between your computer and the Cable modem. Then the Phones in your house can use the IP Phones interface instead of using the phone company. However, you would have to disconnect the outside phone lines to get this to work properly. In this way you just pick up your phone and dial.

Some services may not be available or may work differently with a system like this. For instance with an IP Phone there is no way of knowing the address of where you are calling from. So generally there is some software that you have to use to input your physical location. Often there are services that are not available on a normal phone also like audio message email, answering service, and mailbox service. The AT&T people can give you local phone numbers at another location for an additional $5.00 so a relative can call a Local location and go through their IP phone system.

We have an IP Phone system at work. Regular phones also connect to the system as well as IP Phones. It is just like using the phone normally. You do have to have a good broadband connection for good service.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Vonage also gives you the ability to use more than 1 number. Let's just use me as an example. I live in the 330 area code. My family lives in the 419 area code. Vonage allows me to have my normal 330 service, and have a forwarding 419 # that is local for my family to call so they aren't charged long distance.

Nice.

This sounds like an excellent way to serve some jail time.

Also, remember - when running VOIP, you need a seperate subscription for 911.
