Hello All, i have an
HP Pavilion 7840
Windows 2000 Pro SP3
766MHz Intel Celeron Processor PGA370

I want to upgrade my processor. Can i upgrade to a
Pentium III or better as long as it is a PGA370?

Thanks in Advance.

Should be able to, I have 2 Celeron Socket 370s, 1.0GHz and 1.2GHz, and both are FC-PGA CPUs. The FIC FA-15T motherboards will accept P-III FC-PGA CPUs from 550MHz to 1.26GHz [when the book was published]. FC-PGA is commonly called the 'flip chip'.

Sorry, left this out, can't go better than P-III, the early P-IV uses a Socket 423 board and the later P-IV uses a Socket 478 board.

so a Intel 1.13 GHz Pga370 Pentium 3 Processor would be ok as long as i dont go over Pentium III?

Yes, and no... check your Manual... you can definetly use a COPPERMINE P III, but maybe not a TUALITIN P III...

Ben

i went to HP.com to down load a manual and there is nothing in there about my processor, however i did find some information on the site about my motherboard. it says...

About the Intel(R) Celeron(TM) Processor with MMX technology
These systems are designed to operate with the Intel Celeron Processor running at speeds up to 800 MHz. The microprocessor implements MMX(TM) technology and maintains full backward compatibility with the 8086, 80286, Intel 386, Intel 486, Pentium (R) processor, and Pentium Pro processors.

The processor, in addition to its expanded data and addressing capabilities, includes the following features:

Ready for the next generation OverDrive processor
On-chip numeric co-processor
32 KB Level 1 cache (16 KB for data, 16 KB for code)
128 KB Pipeline Burst Level 2 cache
Read and write burst mode bus cycles
Intel 810 chipset
Integrated 230 MHz RAMDAC Graphics Controller configured for 8M or 11M of Dymanic Video Memory
SDRAM memory expandable to 512 Mbytes

i looked inside my computer to see what type of socket i had so that i can upgrade and it is a PGA370. how do i tell what i can use and what i can't?
