Let me first describe what I am doing now and then I''ll follow with my question. Right now I, like so many others, have a cable modem internet connection. This in turn means that I have a dynamic IP address that the cable company leases me everytime I reconnect to the net. I also have windows xp and I am hosting a web site on my pc using the version of IIS that comes with the install, which I believe is IIS 5.1.
Now in order for me to host my site I need an application or service to help manage my dynamic IP address so that it appears to be static and I can then have domains point to it. For this service I have found a great free and quick service that actually provides you with a free domain, well a sub-domain of its own top level domains, which will constantly update its DNS servers with your IP address and point the free domain it gave you back to your computer.
This is great and all, but like I said you have to use a subdomain of their top-level domains, in other words they own so an option for me is but I always have to have the ".no-ip.com".
Now, here is what I want to do. I have a bought a few domains and would like to use them, but I dont want to pay for any hosting fees. I have another PC lying around, that I would like to turn into a DNS server. Now my real question is, can I manage the hosting of my own site from my house even though I am using a dynamic IP address.
Does anyone know of any good software out there to handle this or has had any experience with this? Any information is greatly appreciated and if you need anymore explanation about my question feel free to ask. Thanks in advance guys.
