I've inheireted a mess of a Network from our original IT guy that was let go... needless to say, I'm trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

Here is what happens: Within certain programs, usually MS Office apps, when you try to save a file you get a "disk full" error, or just a "Document Not Saved" error. Which leads me to believe that I don't have write access to the file or directory. But, if you go into the directory, and right click and make a copy of the file, and rename it something new, you allowed to do that. Then if you open that new file, and start working on it, it may be able to save once or twice, but eventually it too will give you the same error? What gives?

I had thought it was an MS Office problem, but since only one user is experiencing this problem, and I've upgraded their MS Office from 2000 to 2003, and it still does it, it makes me think that it's most likely a permissions issue. Any thoughts? Thanks

For disk permission.. you have generally 6 permissions areas..

1) Full Control
2) Modify
3) Read & Execute
4) List Folder Contents
5) Read
6) Write

Now.. if you have Modify selected, Write is automatically selected as it is a "lesser" privelage.

If you can modify a file, then writing a new file will not be denied.

I do not believe this is as much a permissions issue, as an installation issue.

installation issue"? Installation issue concerning the particular program? Because, I have uninstalled and reinstalled a newer version of MS Office, and it still does it...

<grasping at straws>

1) Check to see if Disk Quotas were enabled. Perhaps your predecssor was experimenting with that on this one user.

2) Delete rights missing? may have to look under advanded properties settings.

Check the directory that is set for automatic backup as well as the directory the document is in.

I think I figured it out... I gave the user Full Control and then redefined all child objects in the directory to mimic the parent. It seems to be working now...

The only security options that were unchecked were "Change Permissions" and "Take Ownership" all the rest were checked. Maybe it was an issue with the files being created by another user, and then when I tried to save the files with another user, some ownership/permission issues ensued.

Who knows. All I know is that it seems to be working for now.
