Hello,

Is there a way to set permissions on a particular file based on its name. Foe example if the files name starts with "Mech-???" then the Mechanical group would have full access and everyone else would just have read only.I have a couple of groups sharing a directory and changing files. Any advice would be appreciated.

It sounds like they need to separate their files so that you can set the appropriate permissions on each group's files. Just create subfolders in the current directory, move each group's files into the appropriate folder and set the permissions to allow the access needed to each folder.

Thnks for the response.

Unfortunatly we need them in the same folder so AutoCAD can x-reference the files.

You can select multiple files and set permissions on the group of files. Just select the files you want to have the same permissions, right click, properties. Set the permissions you need. That may get to be a pain if the permissions change very often though.

There is no way to set a files permission base on it's name. That said though the senerio that you layed out above would be easy enough to remedy by using security groups effectively.

Create a domain local group called Mechanics add the users and/or global groups that need to modify the file(s) to that group. Then add that group to the NTFS permissions for the desired file(s, set the permission to either modify or full control. Next add and/or set the permissions to read for the everyone group.
