Greeting Everyone,

I got a general question. I am running workload generator on a server with windows 2003 server EE SP1. Running Perfmon with all instances of memory counters captured. I was wondering which counter do I look at to compare memory utilization performance.

Thanks

HT

Pages/Sec - should stay below 20. High values usually a result of how virtual mem is configured.

Pool Nonpaged Bytes/Pool Nonpaged Allocs - Nonpaged stuff is data that can't be written to virtual memory. Compare it to the actual amount of RAM installed, and you will get an idea of how much RAM is dynamic for new projects, and how much stays tied up in the baseline if the percentage is high, chances are you need more RAM. On the other hand, the Allocs counter will tell you how often those non-paged bytes are actually used. If the number is low, chances are you have a mem leak, since bytes should be taken out of RAM if not used.

Committed/Available Bytes - How much VM is being used vs how much is available for use. Available decreases as Pages/sec value goes up.

Depending on the mail role of the server (fileserver, DFS, Exchange, SQL), your memory needs will vary. If you let us know what you're using it for, we can give you more specific feedback.

Thanks for the reply,

the main thing I want to do is to compare how one system utilize memory vs. another. Using perfmon with all memory counters and the same workload on both system. I was wondering what counter I need to compare?

Thanks
