Converted an InDesign document to PDF format on my XP machine and e-mailed it to a friend who is running MS-Vista. She has the latest Adobe Reader and can view the document but there is no response when she tries to print it. She has no printing problem otherwise. Anyone have an explanation for this hangup? Thanks.

This was an old workaround in the days of Netscape browsers, might be worth a go?

Try saving the document, using Adobe's "Save" icon. Once the document is saved to a local drive, open it with Adobe Reader and then try to print it.

What if I run into problems printing a PDF file?

linney: Finally got over to my client to try yours and another suggestion, but to make a long story short found that the default printer had been set to an xps extension, resulting in Vista trying to save every PDF print job to that extension, etc. Changed the default to her printer and no problem. When Vista sees PDF it brings up the xps extension, which apparently is intended to compete with Adobe's PDF setup.
Many thanks for your help.

Looks like xps is just that:
filext.com said:
The XML Paper Specification (XPS), formerly codenamed "Metro" and subsuming the Next Generation Print Path (NGPP) marketing concept, is Microsoft's initiative to integrate document creation and viewing into its Windows operating system. XPS is scheduled to be shipped with Microsoft's Windows Vista. The file format is basically a Zipped XML file. .....

Does Vista allow you to set the application to use for handlig specific file extensions like XP does?

Turkbear: To answer your question: Don't know; still using XP. In retrospect, the problem was that apparently when Vista sees a PDF file it automatically sets up xps as the document printer, so all I had to do was make my friend's HP printer the default one for PDF documents. Then the PDF file printed normally.

Control Panel\Default Programs, handles all the edit file type settings etc.
