I have a several pdf files which have been created by someone else which contain hundreds of rather dull but simple text pages is there any way I can compress or reduce the file size

pdf compression

Just my 2 cents worth, but I've always heard and practiced that compressing .pdf is not advisable. For one, they're already compressed by nature, therefore further compressing them would only yield a negligible benefit. Also, further compression can hamper cross platform accessibility.
