Is it possible to have a NT 4.0 Server running a domain without any WINS or DNS servers...you know, just a good old PDC with all fixed IP addresses and no excessive crud on the server????
I believe it would be "possible," but why would you wanna deal with manual IP addresses and lmhosts files. Let the server handle that for you. How many computers are on this network?
I recently setup a LAN of about 10 PCs with a PDC, WINS, and DHCP server on the same box. I'm with Kjonnnn, you can do it, but why? If you have the server, why not use it and let it do what it's designed to do. It'll save you trouble and hassle in the long run.
If you are serious about using a router as your DHCP Server you will still need DNS or WINS on your PDC.
For our remote sites we used a Cisco 1601 ISO version 12.0 and DHCP works great. But we still used the Wins on the PDC at Corperate for name resolution.
Installing WINS and Configuration
Once you install the Windows Internet Name Service on the Services Tab of the Network Properties page.
Reinstall current service packs and hot fixes
Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Wins Manager
Add Wins Server
Enter IP Address of server running WINS
