Hey,

My computer is a 233MMX Socket 7
with 128MB RAM and I currently
have a puny 2MB PCI S3 video card.
Can I upgrade to a AGP card?
Or can I only use PCI video cards?

Thank you,
karmafree.

Karmafree,
You can only upgrade to an AGP video card if you have a AGP expansion slot on your motherboard, otherwise you will need to get a PCI card and just replace your current one. You can consult your motherboard manual to see if you have an AGP slot. If necessiary, you can remove the case cover on your computer and look at your motherboard to determine if you have an AGP slot, it will look similar to PCI(white slot) and ISA(black slot) slots except AGP slots are brown and are usually located close to the processor. Make sure you unplug your computer and take the proper ESD precautions.

Very few boards of that age and spec have an AGP slot!
You may be lucky, fingers crossed.
Probably the best PCI card for a system of your spec would be a 16 or 32mb Nvidia TNT2 and still currently available.
Also this card runs on the latest Detonator XP drivers, that U can download from the Nvidia website.
The Voodoo 3 16mb PCI is also a good card for this spec of system, but unfortunately has little support nowadays, although some diehards continue to modify excisting drivers to suite the newer operating systems like XP.
These are good to pick up second hand! but still command a good price . Martin

Matrox also has some good..currently shipping and supported PCI adapters....G200 & G450. You can get them with multiple head support as well.

Yes but as I said! for this spec of machine and relative cost compared to the system value, I know there are better (more expensive PCI cards out there)
Other thing is, as I have experienced myself, getting a much faster card for a low spec machine doesn't necessarily mean fantastic gains in graphics performance! This is becuse the lower specification of motherboard/processor and ram will not allow the graphics card to run as fast as it could!
BOTTLENECKED!!!
So a TNT2 16mb/32mb is about as good as you need!

Yes, I would agree....a better option would be to upgrade the mobo/processor...cost/value wise. You could probably find a pretty cheap PII combo somewhere...which would have the perk of an AGP slot!!

Hey,

Thanks for the advice guys.
I've ended up putting in a
Matrox Millenium II PCI card
with 8MB memory onboard
expandable to 16MB max.
I got it for £32 ($42) second
hand at ebay.co.uk
This card was £200 ($287) back
in April 1997 I think.
Is that a good deal or shall
re-auction it?

Thank you,
karmafree.

Perfectly good card and one that will do you proud.
A lttle expensive as you can buy a 32mb TNT2 for £32.
Probably worth £15-£20. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!
