Can someone please verify that these ratings are for
the memory bus speed.

If so, is there a way to determine what the front side bus speed is by the PCxxxx name ?

Or does it vary by chipset ?

thx much

I do not know of any motherboards that officially support any memory higher than DDR400 at this time. Many motherboard manufacturers implement the front side bus and the memory bandwidth in different ways. I use a netvista at work that is suppose to be a P4, but I ran a system scan on it from the site and it says the system has a front side bus speed of 100Mhz and is using PC133.

One thing this is dependent on is the capability of the chipset. However, not all chipset options are always implemented. The implementation of the chipset to motherboard interconnects is not standardized. As an examply, some companies go out of their way to include the ability to adjust things like voltage for overclocking for some motherboards and some manufacturers on some motherboards choose to keep everything simple and standard for OEM manufacturers. Things can differ quite a bit between model numbers of the same manufacturer.

At they have a utility that can scan your computer and tell you what kind of memory you have and what the bus speed is on the front side bus. There are other sites that can detect and test memory and other system information. Sisoft Sandra is one name that comes to mind.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

thanks for the info,i have a mobo that was originally in a netvista P4, i am gonna check it out for the fsb info.
I wouldnt be surprised if its the same mobo, soundmax integrated sound, integrated vid and lan right?
Big IBM logo right beneath the P4 cpu?

fenix,
One thing I forgot to mention is to make sure you use two identical memory sticks from the same manufacturer. Varying sticks can have different latencies and cause delays when mixed together.

It is a tested fact that "identical, double-sided" DDR sticks are the fastest overall in a dual-channel configuration. Single-sided is not far behind, so if you have to settle for it, don't worry too much about losing out.
