I currently run pc100 memory on my pc. I have the chance to purchase a pc133 512mb stick. Can I just install this and my pc will recognize it?

A lot will depend on your motherboard and whether the PC133 will fall back to PC100, some will, some won't. Even harder for PC133 to fall back to PC66. Might check with or for your computer make and model or motherboard make and model, if both PC100 and PC133 are listed then their memory should work. Always a chance the 2 won't mix, have to be the same PC100 or PC133.

I had considered that, but of course I was hoping for a miracle answer. Thanks Bluejacket.

Well, if you are using a system that supports PC100 memory, chances are that the max amount per slot is either 128MB or 256MB. It's not likely that a 512MB stick would be fully recognized.

Another problem is that most PC133 sticks still being sold today are single-sided and extremely dense. Older motherboards usually have a problem picking up this kind of density. If you must buy PC133, go with dual-sided sticks for the best compatibility.

Finally, realize that there is no advantage to using PC133 over PC100 in your system. It's still going to run at 100MHz, even if the PC133 stick is recognized.
