PC Won't Power Down Correctly.

Hi,

Recently my PC has stopped powering down correctly.

After shutting down the PC the lights on the front of the case start blinking (slowly at first, but gaining in frequency). The fans are also spinning in time with the flashing lights. The only way of stopping this is to pull the plug to the mains supply.

Other than this problem the PC is working fine.

Has anyone seen this problem before?

I assume it is a hardware fault and am hoping it is simply the PSU that is dying (and not something like the motherboard!).

Any help will be much appreciated!

Ed Metcalfe.

Sounds like it may in fact be your power supply. I would change it as soon as possible to avoid damage to other components. It is possible that something else is causing this, but eliminate this first.

I agree with xit... it kinda sounds like a prewarning on the PSU side, the BLINK BLINK...

You should be able to shut it down by pressing & holding the power button. Safer than yanking the mains. Or just never shut it off...

I agree PSU is the first suspect...always good to have a spare if you buy one and it's not the problem. At least that is my explanation for accumulating a closet full of working components [smile]

No chance it's a MS OS issue? Windows has some weird shut down bugs.

Ed,
If this is a retail PC (like Dell or HP), check the manual for error codes. I know with HP, there is a set of "blink" LED codes that can point to a number of things such as the video card or memory. The blink code can occur at startup or shutdown.

It does seem like the power supply, but definitely check for a blink pattern just in case.

Thanks for your help guys. Time to purchase a new PSU by the looks of it! Still, sounds preferable to a new motherboard. :)
