Hello.

I recently built a new pc:

pcchips M848 board(sis 748 chipset)
Athlon XP 2600+
512mb Ram (pc2700)
Creative Nvidia 5600FX 128mb
winXP Pro

It was working perfect for about 2 weeks, then 3 days ago, i installed Call of Duty, and with that DirectX9

it was after this i noticed a considerable slowdown

I tried to 'un rar' a file i had sown loaded, and winrar hung (it was showing in processes, but not opening)

winzip did the same, and then it go t to a point where notepad would open about 10 minutes after i tried to open it, CTRL+ALT+DELETE wouldnt bring up the task manager, and i couldnt even shut the pc down.

I installed SiSoft Sandra, it said my cpu was too hot, and to check imediatly.
When i checked it, the thermal pad seemed to have melted onto the cpu.

i took it back, replaced the cpu, just tried to use winrar again, still locks up, re-ran sanra, still saying the cpu is too hot

the system also has 2 exhaust fans, so it has good airflow.

if anyone has any ideas, i'd be grateful

ps: the board has 'auto detect' for cpu and ram speed, and shows the cpu as a 2200+. any ideas on if i need to change a setting?

thanks in advance

SisSandra is more than likely reading the wrong sensor on your motherboard and misreporting temperatures. Did your motherboard come with a utility to read temperatures? Can you see temperatures in BIOS?

The thermal pad is designed to melt over the CPU. It is not, however, designed for reuse. When you replaced the CPU, did you also receive a new heatsink and pad? And are you sure you received an XP2600+ when you received your replacement?

yes, i used thermal paste on the heatsink when i replaces, and this is a 2600+ as was the other one, and they both showed as 2200+, and yes, i can see the temp in bios, and it shows as 50 degrees where as sisoft says 127 degrees.

it seems to be going ok now, just winrar locking up now, but everything else seems fine

127 degrees Fahrenheit = 52.7777778 degrees Celsius, is this what you are saying?

Have you checked the units? 50°C is 122°F - so they could both be accurate.

According to SisSandra (version 2004.10.9.89), my board temperature is 187.7C/369.8F (it shows both C and F). Furthermore, its readings for my CPU and Chassis fans are nowhere close to reality, so needless to say, my faith in SisSandra as far as temperature and fan readings is nil.

As far as the CPU speed being 2200+, download AMD CPUID and the AMD CPU Information Display Utility from here:

run them and see what they report. Post some of the info here if these report the wrong speed too.

sorry, i meant that it said 127C which was about 260F or so

well, i ran an option in the bios, 'Optimal Settings' which has fixed the cpu shoiwing only 2200 problem

but still programs are hanging bad, mainly:

yahoo messenger
winrar

yahoo leaves a 52k Ypager footprint in the processes that i cannot end, same with winrar, cannot be ended, and the system wont turnoff/restart when they are there

i guess this is more a software problem then a hardware problem =[

Is winrar hanging on all files or just a certain one?

Have you run a virus scan lately? Try running a couple of online scans from smah's faq760-3862

Running some memory tests may reveal something. Both of these memory testers will create bootable diskettes that automatically start their respective memory tests upon boot:
