Can anyone help with the following problem.
I have Windows ME installed - pc runs as normal when playing games or running usual office applications etc but when I log onto the Internet/Mail the pc almost grinds to a halt.
It logs on ok brings up home page etc but pc then slows down dramatically, screen updating is very slow and mouse(USB) runs slow. there are no activity(SD,RD) lights on the modem.
Move mouse pointer (slow, jerky) down to task bar etc all computer activity in slow motion for minutes then everything normal till more info downloaded then back to slow motion.
It has got to the point that internet/email is unusable.
I have checked for viruses (Norton antivirus upto date).
I have used system tools to see what is happening but there is no untoward activity tying up the processor.
It seems to me to be something to do with Dial up Networking as with Internet explorer not loaded or Outlook express not loaded (just dial up networking) I get the problem

1. It can be the internet configuration. If there is a proxy server and if you need to get that configured, look for help from the service provider.

2. Is your modem to telephone cable is fault OR not having quality joints, this can heavily slow down. Suggest try using another cable.

3. If your telephone line is noisy (not our noise.. it is magnetic/electrical noise), this can happen.

4. Also check if you can configure the modem again.

5. If you are using external modem, select the com port in the device manager settings and set its baud rate to 115,000 (assuming you are using a 56k modem). Com2/Com1 may have the default at 14400 or 9600 baud.

Hope this helps solve your problem :) ramani :-9

It is NOT the ineternet provider, proxy server, Modem, Telephone line, connecting wires, modem setup.
It is something within Windows.
I establish a connection using DUN - no other program running - initiate Norton live update(doesnt need to use Internet Explorer)starts to download what it needs but then problem described in original post starts. When the slowdown is active THERE IS NO ACTIVITY ON THE MODEM LIGHTS (I am using an external modem but have also used internal with same problem)
The slowdown affects all windows activity until DUN is disconnected then windows activity is normal.

I know this may not help , but have you follow your ISP's instruction for setting the DNS config etc?

The other thing that will give a load of grief is simply WINDOWS ME.

It really is that bad - you should try putting on Win98 instead and trying that!

I'm willing to bet you wouldnt get any probs then.

Think you might be right sonnyjim will bite the bullet and load Win98.

Thanks for your input
:)

Yea ... go back to W98se or W200 or XP.

ME is really ... ummmm... terrible.

What system are you using? if your processoris slow then that may be the problem if it is a softmodem. mine was like that on my old K6-2 450 system

There is nothing wrong with windows, it's two things. You computer may be running on virtual memory. Also, it has to do with the way it caches your internet files. Change the settings so it doesn't cache as much, and clear the .tmp files that are already on your computer. Use Disk Cleanup.
