PC powers itself off immediately. CPU, Mobo?

The story so far:

This PC, a Medion 3000, decided it would not power up a few weeks ago so I replaced the power supply. This worked for under a week. When it failed it had the same symptoms i.e. on pressing the power switch it powered up for a few seconds then shut itself down. This time I removed the heatsink, cleaned away the remains of the old heatpad, replaced it with silver grease and reassembled. Lo and behold, it powered up. This time it lasted until Wednesday. I have tried cleaning the CPU and heatsink, and tried without any grease or pad. Before each attempt I re-initialised the power supply.

Should I replace the CPU next or the motherboard? Or both? I don't think it's the power supply as changing the power supply back made no difference.
 
Its there, likely, but you likely need a "K" number. MSI uses 2 different systems, its crazy. Look around the mobo for a "K" number, or another number, something like a K7 number. That would be in addition to the MS-6716.
For instance, I have an MSI NEO2 and its also an MS-6728 and an 865Neo2.

You could also look thru the socket "A" mobos listed there, but it would be easier if you can locate any more numbers on your mobo.
I bet its there, just gotta work harder. MSI has a difficult naming scheme. Thats a polite way to put it.

Finally found time to continue. I can't see anything wrong with any capacitors. I can't find either details of the mobo or a new mobo, anywhere. I have had no response from an email I sent to MSI (three days ago!).

Progress so far. I just removed the mobo. Hoovered the case out. Air blasted the mobo (with no RAM or CPU in it), Air blasted the RAM & CPU and re-assembled. So far I have only re-inserted the CPU, RAM and video card, Well, knock me down with a feather will you! It starts! Its lost the time. I powered off and verified the CMOS battery is good - (3.1v). I powered up again. Still OK! Wow! Going over the BIOS settings leads me to post two questions.

According to Frank4d (above) it should be running 333MHz FSB with a internal multiplier of 13. Well its set to 166 with a multiplier of 13. It's a Pheonix BIOS and I can't see anywhere to alter this setting! Should I worry?

Second question. One of the setting is "CPU disconnect control". with the choices of enabled or disabled. A quick google got me nowhere. Can anyone please enlighten me as to what this setting does?

Finally - I have been wondering, could my Fathers habit (after shutting down windows) of switching off the power bar (into which the computer/printer etc. are plugged) and then removing the power bars own plug from the mains outlet have any bearing on what's going on here?

I shall now proceed to plug it all back together - and await developments (with some trepdidation!)

First question, seems ok, 166 is actually 333 according to AMD. Does your cpu show up as the correct MHZ?
Second question, i dont have a clue!
Third - actually that is a good practice.
But a better one would be for you to get a UPS (uninterruptible power source (supply). They are cheap these days and you can plug your computer, monitor and printer into it and protect it.

Oh, when you put the pci cards in, do them one at a time, make sure they are working right and then go on to the next one.
If you have to install a sound card (not on-board), do that first.
Then any other pci cards, still one at a time.

At this point, whatever you do, dont do two things of any kind at once. Do one thing, boot, check device manager to see all is well, turn machine off, do another job, boot, check dev mgr, on and on. That way, if there is a devil you will find him real fast!

Also, you could still go to MSI and find the manual for a mobo that is close to yours, if you cant find the manual for your mobo, just one that is real close should have the info on "disconnect control" as it appears to me, at this early point, to be some form of protecting the cpu, or at least tied to the cpu anyway, maybe a form of overheating protection.

Searching at the MSI website for a manual for MS-6716, which is your mobo number that you gave, i get this page, which shows 4 mobos, all in the same family. I believe your mobo may be one of them.

However, you should be able to find another number on your mobo, besides the MS-6716 number, there should be another number, possibly starting with "k".
I know my 2 MSI mobos have the 2 numbers on them.

Thanks for everyones help. I have disabled "CPU disconnect control". The motherboard looks pretty close to the KT4M but it is not the same. There are definately no other numbers other than MS 6716 VER:1 and N1996. I am plugging stuff in bit by bit. I have enabled slow boot - so each boot up takes a while! But so far - so good - fingers and toes X'd!

BTW - Just had a reply from MSI

"Your board is the OEM product ,therefore, please try to contact your OEM vendor (Medion) for assistance on your issues or inquiries. We regret that we can't give you a direct help here."

Half expected response really!
