PC makes shutdown noise all the time and uses cpu

Hi fellas,
Basically my pc has just developed a strange noise over the past few days and its getting more frequently. The noise only usually occurs just as its shutting down just before the fans go off but now its just happening randomly and the hdd light flashes when it makes this noise. Im on winxp and AV's are upto date etc and ive taken the case off and blown all the dust out etc but that wasnt the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated cheers.

What brand of HDD are you using? I've had a similar situation with Maxtor.

I'm using one Fujitsu 10gb used for just backup etc and one 40gig one of which im not sure the make of without looking but im pretty sure its not maxtor. i am thinking its probably the maxtor that in knackered as my mate gave it me a few months ago and i think its pretty old. I've just disabled it in device manager to see if it stops the noises but not sure if this will stop it spinning etc??

If yo feel that the "Fujitsu" is the culprit, try removing the power lead(cable) from it.
See if the situation stops. If this is the case I would retreive any data that you want from this before it completely dies.

Lol yeah i did exactly that as soon as i posted my last post. It seems its not the fugitsu one afterall as its still happening
Could it be all the reformats i've done over the past few years that have worn it out (i had to format it about a month ago)?? As it turns out theres not much on it i need to backup anyway. Is there a way i can fix it or just go for a new one? Due a new pc soon anyway i suppose...

You could go to the hard drive mfgrs website, download their diagnostic software and run it to make sure the hard drive is bad.
