My PC keeps freezing for a couple of seconds and then continues.

I am in Word 97. Every minute or so the PC will freeze, mouse and keyboard entries, for a couple of seconds and then unfreeze. There is no AutoSave set. Is this a Windows 98 issue?

You could have some spyware on there, feeding info over the internet connection and using up the resources.

Download and run AdAware, a spyware/trojan search and removal tool.

Also, be sure you anti virus program is up to date and run a full system scan.

If not done on a regular basis, its might be a good idea to run a Windows cleanup. Start the comptr in the Safe Mode, and disable any screensaver, then go to Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, and run the Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk (Standard, Auto Fix Errors) and the Disk Defragmenter. Restart the comptr.

Hello

Go to you system info - start - programs - accessories - system tools - then down to system info. Go to the tools tab and go down to system configuration utility. Now go to the startup tab and look for Find Fast. If it is there uncheck it, restart the computer.

Hope this helps

It could be a CPU usage problem, i.e. some program is regularly using a high percentage of your resources.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my HP Printer software querying my printer. I found it by running System Monitor and noticing Kernel Processor Usage peaks at regular intervals. Then I hit Control/Alt/Delete once to bring up the Close Programs dialog box to check which programs were running. I end tasked the printer software and the peaks disappeared.

When you are in Word try going to Start\Run\type sysmon and click on Ok. This may help you diagnose your problem. If you get regular peaks when you do nothing, then some program is using your resouces and needs to be shut down. It could be spyware or a virus, but I assume you have already checked for that. If not you may have to disable programs one at a time and use a process of elimination to find the culprit.

If you only get high processor usage while using Word, it may be a problem with the document you are in. In which case try saving the document in Rich Text Format and then saving that as a Word document. That eliminates any macros or looping that may be causing the problem.

Hope this proves helpful.
