PC halts after POST if a USB drive is left connected.

OK, so I admit, this is more in the way of an irritation than a problem. But I am hoping someone can throw some light on the situation as I have been searching for some time mow for an answer, with no luck. Obviously.

On my PC, if I leave a USB drive powered up and plugged in at boot up, the the PC goes through POST, gets as far as displaying the IDE drives etc and halts. I have to power off the USB drive, &/or disconnect and press the reset button to boot up.
I have USB Legacy support disabled in the BIOS.
I can leave my key in this PC and boot up is normal.

I use a USB key to cart diagnostics and stuff around. I have noticed that when looking at someones PC sometimes, if I re-boot & have left the key in, then similar things happen. Sometimes it is enough to pull the key to resume the boot. Other PC's require the key is pulled and a reset performed. Some, particularly Dells I have noticed, will boot to the windows welcome screen, or perhaps not that far and hang until the key is pulled. It does not seem to matter whether the BIOS is set to enable or disable legacy USB devices.

I have several USB keys, so I do not think the problem is related to any specific key.

Any thoughts anyone as to why this is happening and how to prevent it?

Check your boot order and make sure that your Hard Disk is first in the list

HDD is not only first in the list - all other boot options have been disabled. i.e. CD-ROM - secon HDD & floppy and 'other devices'

There is probably another usb setting in the bios to allow usb devices to be boot devices. Disable the setting.
