Hello Friends,

I don't know this is the right forum topic. I need to clean up a PC desktop to speed up. What do I need to do ?

1. Run Anti-Virus ?
2. Clean-up temporary files ?
3. Defragmentation ?
4. Remove unnessacaraty software ?

....

Remove any unused stuff from startup.

Adaware.

Spybot search & destroy.

Rather than anti-virus you might consider one of the internet security packages. But if you go that route you have to schedule updates and scans at your available time else you will be worse off.

I wouldn't defrag (assuming ntfs) - as it does not give noticeable performance improvement (in my experience) and it can cause problems (filestore corruptions). I'd also say the same to any registry cleaning software. Adequate RAM and pruning the startup list (both mentioned above) are the most critical steps to take (assuming hard drive not nearly full - that situation causes serious performance issues too).

Running virus/malware scans will only make a difference if there is something nasty on the machine (assuming it successfully removes it) - and the scans themselves are a serious overhead. The security suite in use also makes a lot of difference. Norton and McAfee suites are resource hoggers. The free AVG, Avast and Antivir Pro are better from that point of view. Personally I don't run scheduled AV/malware scans. I use AVG which gives realtine protection, so once you have a clean machine it should keep it that way without scanning (certainly does for me).

Don't forget that, over time, Windows "rots" and needs a clean install every few years to regain its cleanliness and speed. I've seen this time and again, and all the AS & defrag in the world won't be as good as a clean install.

Hi

I have to put in a plug for CCleaner.

It is free, updated almost weekly, and really makes my computer run better.

I run it every day.

It will clean all the junk off of you computer, check you registry, and let you manage cookies and start up items with ease.

Just Google CCleaner.

That reminds me off my favorite old PC joke:

Q: What's the best way to accelerate a Mac?

A: -9.8 m/sec^2
