Greetings, I'm a newbie PC builder and I wish to build my own PC from scratch, but I'm not sure on the best compatible components for best performance.

I will use a MODO AMD KT266A
AMD XP 1700
2 x 256 MB 184 pin DIMM DDR
but, about the rest of the components, can someone help me?

About the only thing you have to worry about these days with compatibility issues, is don't go for cheap parts.

-For a motherboard, important to go with a big name; Gygabyte, Asus, MSI, FIC...
-For a DVDRom, it's Pioneer or Toshiba - don't waste your money on any other brand (this is the only area of the computer where I specifically tell someone exactly what to buy).
-Video card, ATI has a good lineup now and good driver support, though you can't go wrong with an nVidia card that's made from a reputable company (Asus, Visiontek, MSI, Hercules...).
-For a sound card, either Philips or Creative Labs (Personally I like the Philips cards just because it's "not another Soundblaster&quot.
-Harddrive, go with Seagate, IBM, or Maxtor, whichever is cheapest, avoid Western Digital, they have a troublesome history.
-Modem or NIC, grab the cheapest one you find

It's really not hard building a computer these days, just don't skimp on the motherboard and dvdrom, the rest of the components just fall into place.

Case: Lian li All alluminium (run very cool) extra case fans as standard.
With clear sided case options including coloured cathode tube lighting (bit of a wish list)
350 watt or above, AMD recommended power supply

I built a system on a budget and wanted to see what a celeron could do.

I bought the Asus TUSL2-C motherboard because it could use PC100 or PC133 Memory, and I had a 128 Meg PC100 SDRAM that I didn't want to throw away. This board is actually a PIII/Celeron Board. I purchased a Boxed 1.2 gig Celeron only because it ran around $100 and was the fastest I could find. It has the 256k L2 Cache and uses the 0.13 micron die process so it runs pretty cool. It came with its own CPU coller and Fan, so I didnt have to buy an extra one. I got the motherboard and CPU from

and I was surprised that they mounted it for me.

I used all old equipment mostly. I bought a new Asus 56X CDROM (from adamant). I bought an Enermax Adjustable Case Fan for $8.00, A creative labs Sound Blaster 16 For $18.00 and a new Visiontek Gforce2 GTS-V 32mb DDR AGP-Pro video card for $50.00 from

This system actually runs pretty fast. The Asus Motherboard is a really stable. I was playing Emperor, Sequel to Dune 2000 which is a 3d game and I had to slow down the speed to play it. Say what you want about Celerons, this system does everything I want it to do. It never crashes any games. I just need a little more RAM; 128 Megs of RAM just isnt enough for windows.

Do not buy a FIC AD11 motherboard. They are lemons. They suffer from Memory Crashes if you use an AGP Video Card.

Since you are using amd swing buy there site they have a list of compatable componets.And alls you really need brand name is your ram now im not saying getting bargain basement on the rest of the system but unless you want it for video games then you dont need the best video card.And the same goes for the sound card.Just try to make sure to get a decent mother board and as my personal preference go with the ddr ram.
