Please can you let me know which is preferable.

UTP or STP cables. We used to get UTP but I was now told to get cables with metals at the side so that packets do not drop off the network and there is little inteference. Are these the same as STP?

If you're cabling for ethernet I'd use Cat5e, or Cat6 if it's cheap enough. No one uses STP anymore since 100base-T became the standard.
