Hello everyone. I have Win98 installed on a home PC. Everything works OK and the system is very stable, but whenever I want to go onto the internet or use Outlook Express for e-mail, I have to type in my password and the check box to remember password is greyed out. If I look at TOOLS,ACCOUNTS,PROPERTIES,SERVERS, my password is there and the the box to remember password is checked.

I think it has something to do with originally having a password to open Win98, although when the box appears now, I do not enter one. The message reads IF YOU DO NOT ENTER A PASSWORD, YOU WILL NOT BE ASKED FOR AGAIN or something similar.

How do I get rid of this box and get my PC to use my ISP password when I want to log onto the internet or use e-mail?

Many thanks

Tom

Using My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click on C:\ and Find *.pwl. Delete all entries that you find. Also go to Start-System-Control Panel and double-click on Network.
Make sure you Primary Network Logon is set to Windows Logon. Reboot your computer and if you get a user name and password prompt, just click OK. You may then need to set your dial-up and email passwords again but then you should be set from here on out.

Hi Dave

Thanks for your input. I followed your instructions and all seems to be OK,

Thanks again.

Hello Everyone

I thought that this thread was finished with, but I am now encountering a different problem, which I feel is connected with passwords.

When I got rid of the dreaded password box, the PC called for Win98 CD, which I duly gave it. Now when I boot up, I get a box telling me of a Registry Error asking me to click OK for the machine to repair it and reboot. The machine restarts, repairs and then reboots .................... and then I get the password box again.

I have re-installed Win98 over the top of the existing, but it doesn't help.

Any ideas??????????????????

Regards

Tom

Dude, do NOT delete files unless you've addressed all the issues in "Windows Help" first... go to "Control Panel", "passwords", "User Profiles"... read the options and answer them as you want the system to operate... that's it.
Cheers
