Does anyone know of a freeware app that can be installed on an external USB hard disk and will lock access with a password. we have some hard disks that need to be sent across the country and need to secure them. The app has to be on the hard disk so the other end can just unlock them without having to install any software.

ps winzip with a password won't work as the drives are fat32 and the data is 150GB

When I was born I was so suprised I didn't talk for 18 months

Check out TrueCrypt ( You can encrypt the data on your hard drive to a key. when they get the drive they will have to install TrueCrypt and put in the same key to even see the hard drive....Check it out hope it helps!

truecrypt cannot encrypt existing data on a usb hard disk, it has to format it first. Don't want to use disk encryption as it is very slow and I have 32x 150GB disks

I have two (1TB) each drives that i just encrypted that are USB drives that had data on it before.

Could you not use something like image spanning with Winrar or Winzip? Break it into larger chunks (say 500mb each)?

SimonD.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Maybe something like this can work for you. specifically designed to lock usb drives, and can be moved from one PC to another and retain the lock. A password is needed to access the locked files on another PC. The software is installed and runs from the usb drive itself.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

already looked at that app and also lockngo (which was my preference) but it has to be freeware.
