I want to format my laptop and partition the hard drive so that I can have Visual Studio 2003 on one partition and the Visual Studio 2005 Beta on the other. I'm wondering whether if I do this and install my copy of Windows XP Pro on both partitions will it complain when I try to register it on the second partition, saying that my copy is already registered?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike

It most certainly will complain.
I am not sure why you need to setup Visual Studio as you describe.

Surely if this was the case then it wouldn't be possible to format your hard drive and re-install the OS? Isn't Windows XP once registered linked to that machine and it can be installed on that machine as many times as you want?

I did not state you could not do it, I stated that it would complain.

Your EULA likely states that you are limited to the installation of one copy of XP on the machine, so check your EULA as it likely makes your plan a non-permitted use of XP in most EULAs.

If six months have passed since your original activation, it is likely that a web-based re-activation will be accepted. In all cases using the phone option would allow reactivation in the case of a system rebuild.
