partition suitable for NT ?

Hi,
I currently have windows98 installed,with large disk support enabled.
In fdisk I have 3 fat32 partitions.

The operating system for windows98 is installed on the C: drive

My place is to install windows nt workstation on the D: drive and
have a dual boot solution.

The problem:
When trying to install NT and assign a partition for NT I get
"8057 Mb Disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi does not contain a partition suitable
for starting windows NT.
The hardware must contain NT-compatible partition.


Any ideas ?

NT does not support FAT32. Remove the D; partition and leave it as empty space, then during the install process, let NT create the partition and format it as NTFS.

Unfortunately the problem you will end up with is that the NT will not be able to access anything on the FAT32 area and 98 will not be able to access the NTFS area.

I manage to assign a partition and continue the installation.
But after the first portion of the setup was complete and
I got a screen asking me to reboot. When I'm trying to reboot it does not come up ! I get a black screen.

Could it be something with boot.ini ?
Any ideas ?

The previous post was on the right track but forgot to add:

NT 4 must be able to access the C drive to enable it to boot. i.e. boot.ini, ntldr and so on..
If your C drive is still fat 32 it will not be able to access it.

Your best way to do it go to Fat 16 on your C drive with NT4. Hope this Helps

Marius, good catch. I did forget about the @#$%@#% boot sector.

(I was trying to answer what they asked - my real recommendation would be to re-do the whole thing with NT or better yet Win2K and install Win98 in the trash can.)

Try using a boot manager like MASTERBOOTER maybe...? This might get round the problem.
