In XPP I am trying to partition my C drive into three partions but cannot see the option to do so in Computer Management | Disk Management. Can I not do this on the HD that Windows is on?

Yes with third party software, I use Partition Magic but there are several programs that work equity will.

Are you saying that it cannot be done within Disk Management?

drtom,

Disk Management in win first will not allow alteration of the boot volume under any circumstance.

Second it will not re-partition a slave drive without losing the data.

3rd party apps will do this as allteltec mentioned.

My 2cents ont this: If you check the other posts for partition magic or PM, you will find that for some, this causes additional problems. Others swear by it.

I personally do not use it or any other re-partition app.

If you have or can get another HD, clone the information to it. Re-jumper/cable HD's Partition & reformat the original HD to your liking (insuring that the size is suffieient to hold the information) and clone back your OS & info. Re-jumper/cable & leave the temp drive in or out and you are done.

A bit more complicated but for me, less prone to creating problems.

That's really what I wanted to hear. I am suspicious of anything that manipulates a drive full of critical data.
I did have C: as 3 partitions and reformatted over the weekend thinking that I could change it once everything was loaded (duh should'a checked first).
I have a slave in the tower with all of the backup detail so doing it over again is no big woop. I'll just reformat it again and partition it with fdisk.
Thanks,

I use partition magic and have no issues at all with it.
as for the critical data. all my clients have good back-up procedures and equipment. and I rotate to a new HD drive every year. it's small insurance when you have accounts receivable in excess of $800,000 and over 2 years man-hours at 40 hours a week....so a $100 dollar HD is cheap insurance for my clients.
though I will admit I am a hardware junkie....LOL
I have a mismash of HD's in my computer. I run an IDE Raid and a SATA raid. and multiple large HD's (thank god for a LARGE Powersupply and tower) all total of about 11 drives
plus I have a network SCSI storage.

drtom,
do your research and get another drive and play with it. that is the only way to learn what software like partition magic can do. I also use Acronis True Image for my cloning

Thank you for the post back & the kind agreement.

I am a lot "a--l retentive" & probably old fashioned in a digital world.(I had trouble letting go of my hard copy files a while back) I try to be politically careful about these issues of preference.

As you already have things backed up to your second drive. Forge forward.

I also have been converted to Acronis True Image as I backup completely probably way too often. "bcastner" converted me to this a while back and I have no regrets with this.

firewolfrl has a point in that I have no risk in trying it as everything is backed up. I am also of an older school in that I am comfortable so why change. Mind you, I wouldn't have arrived at where I am if I hadn't accepted change at the right time though.
Thanks guys
