partition lettering

sorry, this may be really really basic but my boss is off ill and i haven't worked with computer basics for ages.

We've had a nasty system crash and now, due to no repair disks being created (again i claim no responsibility) i'm having to reinstall server 2000.

previously the drive was partitioned into c: & d:.

i would really like to keep the stuff on d (our client sites) so i chose to format c and create a new partition and then install 2000 onto it.

its named the partition F:

1.will this cause a problem with starting up
2.can i change this to c:
3.how??

is there a simple way to do this or am i going to have to format the whole drive and start a fresh.

Bit confused - if you formatted c: (during the win2k install process?) why not just install there? Where did you create the new partition? (F

I did format the c: partition within the win2k install, and believe me when i say i must have been the most suprised person to see it was installing to the F: drive.

E is the cd drive, that would just be silly!!!!! (only kidding, just pointing out how ridiculous it is for it to install on the f: drive, and it had to create that too)

It all works so i'm letting it be unless i manage to work it out.

Okay, I think all you did wrong is you selected the new partition as your install partition. All you had to do was choose the C: drive as the partition that you wanted to install Win2000.

When you created the F: partition (not sure why you created it), the F: drive was selected by default as where you wanted Win2000 to be.

There MAY be an easy way to change your drive assignment by making the F: drive Active (FDISK will do this but I'm not sure how to do it with Win2000). This should flip-flop the C and F drives. However, I don't know if Win2000 will work properly after that (since it will be looking to the F drive for system files).

Go to Administrative tools, computer managment. Under the tree that says Storage pick disk managment. You should then see what drives you have (hard drives) so D: and F: I assume. Right click F: and on of the options is change drive letter and path. You should be able to make the changes there.
