Hello I have a Windows XP on my network that is always problematic. Now it fails to initialize or open applications. It gives an error upon log in {the application failed to initialize properly (0x000012d). Cick OK to terminate the application.

It initially told me that it was Low on Virtual memory so I increased it, then it stated giving paging file errors.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem, and fast too.

Work your way through some of these suggestions and see if you turn up anything?

To get any further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

If the error occurred after installing a device driver or application, try using Safe Mode and removing the driver or program.

To check your RAM.

To check your Hard Drive.

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check your drive for problems.

You can also load the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk /r to check for problems.

Removing adware & spyware

Will check your computer for spyware and adware.

See if you have any services that are flagging as "Starting" but not actually running.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

I would do the following. Sounds like it's time to erform some routine maint.

1) go to and download System Mechanic 5. Install it and run the file cleanup and registry fix portions. (It's fully functional for 30 days).

2) Run, from a command prompt (start->run->(type:) cmd and press the enter key.

3) Now type chkdsk c: /R. You'll get a message saying the drive can be dismounted, do you want to run the command on the next boot up. Press the 'Y' key and do a restart. BE WARNED: Running chkdsk c: /R will take some time. Depending on the size of the drive, it may take 10-20 minutes. So don't worry if your system doesn't come backup right away.

4) After your pc reboots, again, open up a command prompt and type: chkdsk c:. You want to make sure there are no errors. I've seen chkdsk report errors after checking a drive 2 or 3 times (If more than 3 checks reports errors I would then think the drive is starting to experience problems).

5) After ALL hd related errors are fixed, download and run a good registry checker and clean up program. I use "CleanMyPC Registry Cleaner". It will find things that System mechanic might not.

6) Defrag your pc's hard drive!!!!!! Fragmentation can cause all kinds of problems. AND if anyone tells you fragmentation isn't a problem, tell them they don't know what they talk about. IF you REALLY want to know more about fragmentation, I suggest you do a google search.

7) Make sure you have an anti-virus program installed. make sure the virus definition file is up to date and do a virus scan.

8) Finally I would down load, install and run Ad-aware to remove all the spyware.

This SHOULD help fix the problems your having with any pc. NOTE: The above procedures will take a bit of your time to complete. It's not a fast procedure, but definetly helps.

I ran a repair with the XP cd, and it restored the pc... however i will be taking the advice i was given above and run a clean up on All the computers on my network.
thanks a million.
