An Encapsulated Postscript File is a page description
which is completely independent of any printer.
But writing a PM65 file in EPS format needs the assignment
of a printer. This file includes then some color management
for the specific printer, which results in complete wrong
prints on the actual engine, which is different.

We use Mimaki JV2-1300 for printing.
This large scale printer cannot be assigned to the EPS converter
because he is not a desktop printer in the view of Windows
(precisely: the printer needs a special Raster Image Processor,
we use Accuprint).

How can we write EPS without any printer assignment ?

This may be offending: it´s completely useless to ask Adobe
questions like this - my desolate experience.
Who can help ?

creating a EPS-file is always printer dependant. The only thing you can do is to install as much PPD as you can and find out which PPD is the most appropriate for your printer. I know it's a question of trial and error but it's the only way

Grillhouse: Please refer to
Postscript Language Reference Manual
Addison-Wesley, 1998
An EPS should be ABSOLUTELY device independent.

This is the way that I do it. Export the file/page as a PDF. When it opens up the PDF for preview, then export it from there. Been doing this on many files for about 3-4 months. Service providers don't have a problem with printer driver errors then.

Of course this works.
But we had avery long discussion about this topic
in the Adobe User to User Forum Win Pagemaker
("PDF for DTP ?"). There are still some problems.
My original question could have been:
"Why don´t we have a clean device independent PPD for EPS-Export ?"
Thanks for your contribution !

When I spoke by phone to the Photoshop Tech Rep--he suggested that I save my photos from Photoshop in EPS format at 85 LPI--so they would hold that mode when imported into Pgemaker 6.5 documents. However, this technique really spread the 300 dpi pixels too much. I believe the EPS might work with some printers, but not with my HP LaserJet 1100. I'm still trying to get a technique developed with my IBM setup that will enable me to save photos in TIFF at 300dpi and 85lpi. If I can do this and print out the same, then the commerical printers should be able to use my end-products without haveing to mess with what I've put together. Any suggestions?

PapaJoe: Place photo in PhS on a 300dpi page.
This is good for nearly all desktop printers.
Of course the source image should have enough
pixels (we talked about). Add anything like Text.
Then make EPS.
Place EPS on PM page (this page has no dpi).
What you see is a 300 dpi preview for text and photo.
You see at least the content and you can scale and
rotate the whole EPS.
If you print on a PostScript Printer, you will get an
excellent quality. If you print on a PCL printer, you will
get only preview quality.
In PhS5 the text ist part of the 300dpi page (rastered).
In PhS6 the text is vectorized (high precision).
The EPS has all informations, but the preview is completely
rastered. To resume:
The whole process works perfectly only for PostScript printers !
A correction is possible: create a preview in PM with higher
resolution and TrueColor instead of Indexed Color. This doesn´t
work correctly in PM6.5 but in PM6.5plus. (6.52 ?)
The lpi-setting is the last step before printing (PhS is not concerned).
For 300 dpi printer resolution about 50 lpi are common, not more.
Hope this helps !

I'll make a test page with both text and TIFF images and give it a try on my HP Laser Jet 1100. If I need to upgrade to a Post Script Printer, I suppose that will be the next hurdle financially. Thanks for the assist and info.
