can someone explain to me the importance of the page file?
where should it be placed? same place as NT4?

the page file is a file used by windows for memory "paging", that is swapping out active memory to the hard drive. This allows windows to work with a much larger memory area than it would if it was limited to only the physical memory in the machine. The default location for the page file is on the boot partition of the system, and the default size is at least equal to the amount of physical memory in the machine. This file is used for the memory dump in case of boot failure. If you move the page file to a different partition/drive or decrease it's size below the amount of physical memory, you will not be able to "dump" the memory. Other than that limitation, put it on the fastest drive on the system. . .99% of the time the memory dump won't help you in diags anyway!
