I checked my work in IE and Safari and they differently -- IE displays it with a white background and Safari with a gray background. I'm using GolIve CS2 and the pages are built with layers. I tried changing page properties but no luck. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Thank you for the reply but I solved my own problem -- it was a broken link to the css style. I'm just learning about how css/divs work.

You might as well give up on IE if you are referring to Mac IE. It has been discontinued.

You should really be checking your work in Windows IE. Mac IE and Windows IE present pages differently.

Although there are differences between Mac and PC version of IE it is possible to get the same layout in both browsers.

Of course differences in browser go beyond simple Mac/PC issues. Different versions of IE PC do things different, and then there are browsers like FireFox which follow the standards and therefore also have differences.

I usually define for the standards, which means making it work in FF, then i make adjustments to get the same layout in IE PC and MAC, amd Safari.

I didn't know about the Mac IE vs Win IE. The site is not really that complex, it's really more of a design/layout issue. Having a lot of experience in using layers in publishing it would be a simple transition. The fact that in the GL layout view you don't really have a concise layout, I find it somewhat frustrating when I view the pages in a live browser. Also, what would you all suggest for controling the space between two type styles? I want to have a bold followed by a normal weight text paragraph but it always displays with an extral space between. The workaround I've been using is a span tag with a hard return after the bold.

Again, thanks for the the advice.

My intent was that one should make no effort to get the same layout with Mac IE. The emphasis should have been: "It has been discontinued" No one should be using this anymore. It is no longer updated for security and it never supported CSS well.

Not sure how to operate this BB. Hopefully "jimoblak" will get this reply?

I use an intelmac and GL 7. Been making a simple site and it renders (?? terminology?) in all my mac browsers yet, when I use IE7 in Parallels or on my IBM T3 it doesn't do the same thing?

I wanted the page width to be 'Auto' so it fits on any sized monitor but it seems IE 7 cannot handle this whereas my 10 mac Browsers can? (AND Firefox and other non-Microsoft Browsers on the PC side also can?)

If I fix the width of each page IE7 'behaves?' But I am limited to the fixed width.

Is there something unique in IE that can fix things?

Despite being the most popular browser in the world, IE has an awful lot of rendering quirks. The best way to assess what issues are at hand is to see a sample. Do you have a URL to share?

I'm not really seeing a difference between IE and Firefox on Windows. It seems fine.

If you are seeing something out-of-whack on your screen, maybe you could post a screenshot.

Hi jimoblak. Here is the first image:

It's 1920 by 1200 on my 24" intelMac. The images on the RHS seem to move to the left.
They used to do this on monitors > 15" until I fixed all RHS images 'right' and cells they were in also 'right' and fixed the page-width to @ 15" monitors.
The RHS images seemed always to creep to the left even though the text seemed 'automatic' in width irrespective of the resize to larger monitors.

(also 1920*1200 res)

doesn't do this. It maintains correct rendering as does all my Mac Browsers even on 1920*1200 res. Neither does Firefox on the XP side @ 1900*1200 res.

It seems related to monitor size or the use of Parallels on a Mac? Monitors > 15" seem to render wrong in IE7?

Maybe I am expecting too much?

(Not sure if you meant 'post' image in this manner?)

A few notes:

1) you should not expect any user to have their browser that wide. It makes reading text difficult since the reader has to span such long lines with their eyes.

2) grab the various 'web developer' extensions for Firefox, Opera, and MSIE (easily googled). These add-ons will allow you to troubleshoot web design. For example, in Firefox, I can turn on visible outlines for table cells and see that the image in question is right aligned. In MSIE, it is left aligned in the cell.

Your HTML indicates that you want it right aligned so there appears to be a bugaboo in MSIE. It might be choking on the slightly odd HTML. Note how your cell size is smaller than your image size.

Code:
<td align="right" width="190" height="150">
<div align="right">
<a title="History of Howlong" href="html_stuff/history.html">
<img src="images/howlong_history.gif" alt="Howlong history" height="153" width="192" align="right" border="0">
</a>
</div>
</td>

Removing the align="right" from your <img src seems to fix your alignment issue.

Thanks for the help jimoblak. Will adopt your recommendations.

regards and thanks again
