Owa name and /exchange

I recently had one of our external IP addresses associated with the name owa.companyname.org.

I then set up an (A) DNS record to point at the correct IP internally and now OWA only works if you type the server name DNS name or IP address without the /exchange at the end.

Does anyone know why this has occurred.
