Hello all,
We are using Backup Exec 9.1. We are using 21 Tape rotation and when the friday full backups run it gets to about 63GB and then it stops and asks for overwritable media. The tape is a 50gb uncompressed/100 GB compressed AIT. What would make the backup stop at 63GB? Any ideas would be appreciated.

DASLG,

Does this happen continuously or was this the first time? Also, was the tape a scratch tape in BackupExec or were you just appending to the tape, hence only 63 GB available.

John

This has happened twice before and I end up running a backup of the files that weren't backed up on Friday. The tape I used this time was brand new.

I would say that the tape is full.

You will NEVER get 100GB on the tape. Anything over 50gig is a bonus. It will depend on what type of data you are backing up as to how much you will be able to fit on a tape (or how much compression you will get). ie If you backup files such as mpgs, MP3s etc they are already commpressed to the compression you get in the backups are little to none. Whereas databases, docs, xls files compress very well.

Might be time to invest in an Autoloader.

Cheers

Sorry it took so long to respond. My other tape drive fits 80 gb of data just fine. The backup is around 68gb total and it always asks for another tape. This past Friday the backup stopped with an overwrite protection error at approx 67.3gb and requested another tape. I put another tape in and the count went to approx 67.9gb. The week before that the total was 68.3gb. There is definately something going wrong. I will continue to troubleshoot this in the mean time but if anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.
