If I did this more often maybe I could remember how....Oh well.

I'm trying to do an initial install of Solaris on a E220R. I thought I remembered how cylinders, slices and the like work but....
MY CURRENT SETUP--------
Disk Name c0t0d0
TotalSpaceCyl 7506
Used Space Cyl 7505
Free Space Cyl 1

# Slice Name Start Cyl Size Cyl Minimum Size Cyl
0. / 0 Cyl 782 Cyls 42 Cyls
1. /usr 783 Cyl 1912 Cyls 578 Cyls
3. /var 2696 Cyl 455 Cyls 17 Cyls
4. /opt 3142 Cyl 433 Cyls 147 Cyls
5. /home 3576 Cyl 1900 Cyls 0 Cyls
6. /projects 5477 Cyl 2023 Cyls 0 Cyls
7. Unused

This is the error I get--------

The following errors were detected in your disk layout:

There are overlapping cylinders. Please check your disk(s) for overlapping
cylinders.

I can't see the overlaping slices that the installer complains about. Sure would appreciate someone else looking at this.

Hi,
SLices are '0' based therefore the basic premise is...

Start + size == Next start

for example slice 0 ( size 782 ) goes from

cylinder 0 to Cylinder 781

means the next slice should start at 782 not 783. But that isn't your problem just an observation since this just wastes disk space.

To find your problem Just add up all your slices and see which one overlaps the next start.

1. /usr 783 Cyl 1912 Cyls 578 Cyls

783 (782) + 1912 = 2695(2694)

3. /var 2696 Cyl 455 Cyls 17 Cyls

2696(2694) + 455 = 3151(3149)

4. /opt 3142 Cyl 433 Cyls 147 Cyls

which overlaps slice 4 which you have starting at 3142.

I think you need to recalculate all of your starting addresses based upon your sizes.

Well that didn't seem top work either.....I think I may be getting clobbered by an earlier attempt.

Is there a way to tell the installer to delete ALL earlier partitions....before it copies miniroot to a slice?

I tried even just creating a root(/) partition and it still complained about overlapping slices

Is there data on your E220R that you need to keep. If not, just do an initial install and repartition your hard drive using the installation gui.

Have you tried the "modify" option in format? It will layout everything for you and you "shouldn't" then have to worry about overlaps.

bfitzmai - Nothing needs to be preserved. Would LOVE to do a FULL CLEAN WIPE!!!!

spamly - That is exactly what I am already doing. Because of an earlier failed attempt the 2nd slice is labeled SWAP. The installer needs to put the miniroot on the first slice in order to do an auto config. I can't find any way to find out the starting cylinder for the SWAP so I would like to just "blow everything away" and start from scratch.

THNX for the suggestions anyway....any other thoughts?

I think you are using the installation disk. Use the software disk 1 of 2 and retry the installation. This installation will run through sysid and then allow you to do an initial install. I recommend that you don't use the auto configuration. Do the manual configuration. /var should be in a partition by itself. This is because var grows. If you are installing 3rd party software, the /opt should also be in its own partition. Set the sizes of these partitions larget than what is recommended. Also set up swap. There are several theories as to how large swap should be. I always use 2X amount of RAM. The manual configuration is through a gui so you will not run into a problem with overlap partitions. Other partitions /usr /projects /export/home are up to you.

bfitzmai - THNX, it works like a champ!!!
