I'm using an Athlon Classic 550 mhz on a Freetech mobo. I was woondering if there is a way to overclock the processor i.e. through a software, without opening it up.

Thanks

I have seen programs that run out of windows that will change the FSB by simply clicking a few butttons. I forget the name of it but you should try doing a general web search for something like that.

Personally though, I would experiment by changing the FSB in the BIOS until you see how well your processor and system take the overclocking. A lot of people will say that heat is the biggest problem when overclocking, but I'm not entirely sure that's true. I have an Athlon 800, when trying to o/c it to only 900 it leads to lot's of BSOD's and other application errors. However, the temperature only raises by a few degrees. Again, you'll just have to experiment to see how well it will take it. You should nonetheless find a way to monitor your processor temperature while experimenting so that you don't burn it up.

The reason I wouldn't start out with a program is because the program may load on start up and continue to set the FSB to a speed that causes say Windows to crash and you may have a hard time getting rid of it. In either case you should be able to change the FSB through your bios(i don't think it would require jumpers) so you wouldn't have to "open it up."

Hope this helps.

Thanks. But I dont think my mobo supports an FSB change. I've already lowered the temp considerably by adding an intake and an exhaust fan to the casing. Thanks for the long and informative reply.

Well, the program that my friend has that does it within Windows manages to change it even though his bios won't allow him to change the FSB either. I don't know how the program does it, but it works. You might want to give it a try. I'm sorry I can't think of the name of it. But it's a small program that you may be able to find by searching the internet. Good luck.

Thanks, but I've already tried searching through google for an overclocking software but no luck. If you happen to remember the name of the program let me know. Thanks again.

Ok, the name of the program is SoftFSB and is made by a guy named H.Oda. Apparently, it seems that the program is no longer being supported by the owner so the only place I could find to download it was off a French website which is here:

Anyway, it looks like the same program my friend had if you want to check it out. But after reading a little bit in trying to find it, I'm not sure if it will work with mobo's that don't have softswitch capability in the first place. His was a PII on an Intel board and I'm not sure if they had that when they made those. Anyway it's worth a shot. Also, I downloaded the program for my own personal use, so if you can't get that link to work out, let me know and I can email it to you.

Have fun.

I'tried it but it doesn't support my mobo. I'm using a Slot A Freetech P7F200A2 and its not on the list of softFSB. Thanks anyway.
