Over-installed WinME, cannot update to IE6

I'm not sure whether this is a WinME issue or an IE6Setup issue.

Put simply WinMe was playing up (not closing down, scandisk running for ever, errors re: unstable display settings, msmouse.vxd and other such drivers) so I ran the WinME Setup.

All went well and the PC appeared stable.

I ran windows update and it listed the update to IE6 as a recommended.

However IE6 had prior to the re-install been the default Browser.

I checked and concluded WinME Setup had changed IE back to IE5.5 while lieaving Outlook Express as OE6.

After downloading IE6Setup, I have now entered a error loop - the setup won't fully install, producing a message stating re-boot and try again. Re-booting produces a message that IE6Setup was incomplete, re-run IE6Setup - which fails. On bootup the meesage appears indicating IESetup should be run.

How can I reset every thing so IE6 can be installed?

I've tried downloading IE6Setup to another folder without success. However I'm not sure if all the necessary files are downloaded as a) it does take very long and b) IE6Setup seems to think some of the files are already downloaded though I thought I had deleted them.

All Google seems to find is how to repair IE6, rather than repair the Setup.

IE5.5 is fine, and if all else fails, it can continue as the default browser.

Many thanks.

My advice go to control panel after y ou have the setup downloaded for internet exploerer 6, uninstall what you can of it from there for it will only uninstall part of it. Then try running the setup again. Also put your system disc in and run sfc from the run box and let it scan and replace any files it finds corrupted or missing.

long time ago I had a similar problem on NT. The solution there was to rename the wintrust.dll file (in \windows\system on ME) before trying to install version of IE you want. Then rename it back when (if) all gone ok. I've no idea if this will work in your situation (it was probably ie 2 and 4 involved, so may not!)

get yourself a version of W98 (from a friend if possible) and install it.

ME is the worst OS Microsoft made in recent years.

Thanks.

I'll spend some time this weekend trying the suggestions and let you know what happens.

If you decide to install W98 make sure you have all your driver files handy. If you don't have them. download them from the internet and store them on a floppy or floppies so you can install them as Windows asks for them.

The Micorsoft website does have an ME trouble shooting section if you haven't tried it already.

I won't be installing Win98 as I have no CD Key, though I agree WinME is dreadful.

The MS WinME supports pages offer some ideas, but I'd already been there and done that.

In control panel -> Add/Remove Applications, there is no reference to IE or IESetup, only a couple of critical updates.

> renaming wintrust.dll

I'll try that now.

Thanks all round…

Thanks, GreyTed - that looks very promising.
I'll be PDF'ing and printing those pages.

It could be a couple of weeks before I report back as I'll not have access to the WinME PC til then.

I sorted it all this afternoon and it took a long time.

There were many false starts and much frustration at the persistant appearance of "A previous program installation was never completed. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close." after clicking "Resume" from the IESetup which appeared every bootup/loading of WinME.

The page which helped was this one:
deleting the folder:
C:\WINNT\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

Many thanks for all your support.
