I am running Win server 2003 with Exchange 2003. I have been up and running fine for a year or so now. During that time I created a Acrons true image of my server with all setting correct and everything working.

Two days ago my email to the outside world stopped working. Initially it was only outbound traffic. Very soon after (a day) the incoming stopped working as well.

Since I would rather be working than spending my creative energy trouble shooting, I just loaded my image of a knowingly working setup with no errors. To my surprise… same problem still existed. (This image system has worked for me in the past)

All of my local mail works fine sending and receiving. I do receive an error back in my inbox after some time (hours to a day).

Here is the log.

I read this to say… Exchange tried to send it and actually did, but the dns servers or outside mxserver is not processing this request. I looked at my mxrecord and the ipaddress information is still correct.

Intralogic…scratching his head!

First thing I would do, is see if your domain registration has expired.

Help! I've fallen and I can't reach my beer.

When you install Acrons true image it sets up its own SMTP server with port 25. When I installed Acronis True Image Workstation 9.1 it buggered up my faxserver mail setup.
You'll have to go in and change the SMTP port settings.

Any changes to your firewall? Are you able to perform an nslookup, and connect to the remote SMTP servers?

My domain is fine.

Acrons worked for a year without disrupting my smtp.

No firewalls. nslookup didnt come back right I dont think!

Have you contacted your ISP?

I know at one point the ISP we had previously used kept changing the DNS point to servers. It was a pain and we dropped them.

When you look at your outbound queues, what error message are the various domains showing?

I'm with ladyslinger - i'd check your DNS server settings in Exchange and confirm with your ISP.

- You can have seperate DNS server settings explicitly hardcoded into exchange which are different than the TCP/IP settings windows uses..

ESM->Protocols->SMTP->Default SMTP Virtual properties->'Delivery' tab->Advanced->Configure External DNS (button)

Hope this makes sense?

Cheers.

I like where your going with this. To me, it seemed like dns. I found out that my isp is also blocking a number of outgoing ports for mail. I was unable to telnet to several smtp servers.

telent smtp.smtpserver.com 25
telent smtp.smtpserver.com 3636
telent smtp.smtpserver.com 5656

and then
telent smtp.smtpserver.com 80 worked.

I rely on my email for my compay so I have another company handeling my email for the time being.

I am going to rework exchange to run for another web client I host from my server and try to use port 80 and check my dns settings in the esm.

I didnt realize that there were additional dns settings.

My only concern now would be... my incoming is working now from the other carrier using the 110 inbound but was still not working from my server. I guess that means my problem is more than just blocked ports. We shall see if the dns helps.

Is there a dns server that I can use other than one from within my network hops?
