We are using Exchange Server 5.5 with Outlook Web Access on a Windows NT 4.0 server. Everything was working fine last Monday. However, on Tuesday, the web access stopped working. I have checked the files (logon.asp, default.asp, default.htm, etc) and they all look fine. The properties under IIS 4.0 also look correct.

This is the error that we have received in house:

Server Application Error
The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance.

The error from outside the office indicates that the user doesn't have permission to view the page.

Inside the Event Log, the following is showing up under the System Log each time a user attempts to use Outlook Web access:

Event ID: 36 Source: W3SVC Type: Warning
Description:
The server failed to load application ". The error was '80004005'.

I have tried to look up the error, in both Microsoft's knowledge base and at eventid.net, but the error either doesn't pertain or doesn't show up.

The only odd thing going on leading up to the problem was a hacker getting in thru our FTP sites. I managed to block him completely by shutting down anonymous access for the FTP sites. However, that was only done to the FTP sites, not the web sites.

Any ideas?

If you receive error 80004005, take the following actions to determine the cause:

- Make sure the IIS Web service (w3svc) is running (if you stop the Web service, you get the 80004005 error).
- Make sure the default Web site is operating on port 80 (right-click Default in Internet Service Manager—ISM, select the Web Site tab, and ensure that the TCP Port is 80).
- If you have secure communications enabled for your Web site, don't select the Require Secure Channel option.
Remove hotfix Q269862; this hotfix broke Exchange in a few ways. See Online Support article Q269862 for more information.

"Make sure the IIS Web service (w3svc) is running (if you stop the Web service, you get the 80004005 error)"

W3SVC doesn't appear to be on the server. I found the IIS Admin Service but not the IIS Web Service.

"Make sure the default Web site is operating on port 80"

Port 80 is still there.

"If you have secure communications enabled for your Web site, don't select the Require Secure Channel option"

I'm not sure where to find this data on the server.

"Remove hotfix Q269862"

I looked for it. It has not been installed on the server.

I am going to try to reapply the service pack. It's worth a shot, anyway.

Thank you.

An update:

I reinstalled Service Pack 4 for Exchange 5.5. This brought back the FTP sites (which I found out had disappeared a few days ago). However, the Outlook Web Access was still gone.

I then did another search on Microsoft's Knowledg base and found article Q248718. It didn't specifically reference the problem but it sounded similar. I created a new Application setting. This caused Outlook Web Access to reappear. Apparently, the setting had been removed somehow.

Thank you for all your help.
