outlook web access page not found

Outlook web access was installed by default during our exchange 2k install. Users have http permission, and it validiates their password. After validation, it brings up a page not found error.

Any ideas? I've seen several other people post similar questions, but haven't seen any results

Make sure users have logon locally rights. Also make sure IIS is on separate server if possible. Install OWA on IIS server, not exchange.

Exchange is running on the same server as OWA, and the users have log on locally rights...This is the default out of the box Exchange config, and it looks like everything is running normally, with no errors...

Please, someone help, I am having exactlty the same problem and I have been searching the web/books desperately in vain for a solution. Looks like the only way to get an answer is to call M$ for $245.00

Ok. I got this problem solved.

Go into IIS, right click on the 'Exchange' virtual directory, go to directory security, check basic authentication. Stop and restart the default website. That should do it.

Let me know if is doesn't.

Its still not working for me...I set those permissions on the Exchange directory in the IIS manager, and it still says the page can't be found. When I click on the two sub directories, system mailbox and exchange, it says 'access denied' and won't let me see inside them. Could that be the problem?

I'm confused by what you mean when you say you click on the sub directories and it says 'access denied'. Where are these sub directories?

This whole problem has to do with permissions in IIS5 for exchange. Have you altered any of the permissions for virtual directories under the default website in the course of your troubleshooting? Put them all back to anonymous, except the 'Exchange' virtual directory, set it to 'basic' only then it should work. Are you still getting prompted for a password? Are you being prompted for a username/password or a username/password/domain? You shouldn't be getting a prompt for a domain, if you are then you are not setting the permissions correctly.

i have posted a lot of queries about subject as well. followed ur advice ashley, thanks. unfortunately i still cannot see the contents of my mailbox. only "unable to display folder. an internal server error occured." this mail server is located outside the firewall and is on a different domain name.

i am authenticated perfectly but i cannot see my mailbox.

please help....

Jeffrey, so you are getting into OWA 2000, but cannot see the contents of your mailbox? Wow, that is a new one. We are talking Exchane 2000/IIS 5 here? Being that the mail server is outside your firewall, I assume OWA cannot work locally, from inside the firewall? Is the mail server on a DMZ or is it completely unprotected by the firewall? From the error, is sounds to me like there may be some corruption in IIS, I am sure you have searched the MS KB? How long have you had this problem? Could it have resulted from something you did in the course of your troubleshooting? Let me know.

i was told that the exchange is before the firewall. This documentation denies that. I have to check our host.

Sounds weird Jeff, never heard of a firewall that doesn't properly support HTTP. What kind of firwall are you using?

I set the permissions are you mentioned in the other post - - everything has anonymous except exchange, which has basic authentication.

A box comes up with "Site" and "Realm" both of which have the name of the server. There is no "domain" box. It accepts my username and password, and gives me this error:

HTTP 500 - Internal server error
Internet Explorer

The problem I refered to in my previous post deals with directory security. I can see the "M" drive for Exchange in explorer, but I'm not able to browse to it, or view security information under myself or administrator. I'm wondering if that's part of the problem, since IIS points to that directory to get the mailbox.

Actually, the error is "PAGE NOT FOUND," not internal server error, if that helps anyone.

Is OWA working internally?
How are you testing OWA remotely?
Did you stop and restart the default website after changing any of the permissions in IIS, do it anyway.
What browser are you using, version as well.

Let me know how you make out.
