Running the latest version of Outlook on Windows XP with SP1 and a dial-up 56k modem. Dials up quite happily, but then prompts me for the passwords (it’s downloading mail from two different accounts on the same server). I have looked through the accounts settings (both from Tools\Email Accounts\ and through the profile) and entered the passwords in each of the POP3 settings sections and made sure there was a tick in the “Remember Password” boxes. Also, when prompted for the passwords, I’ve entered them and ticked the “Remember Password” (or whatever it says there) boxes too (this makes Outlook connect to the mailboxes without any further problems), but each time, it only retains the passwords until I shut down Outlook and re-open it, when it’s forgotten them again.

I’ve double, triple, quadruple and quintuple checked that I’m putting in the right passwords and ticking the “Remember Password” boxes; even had someone else watch me do it for verification. Does anyone know what else I might be doing wrong?

I usually hit this issue when Outlook is set to corporate or workgroup mode.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
