I have just set up Outlook Express on an XP operating system, and imported mail from an Outlook PST file (the user prefers Outlook Express). I set up the account, sent and received test mail, and everything appeared to be working. Shortly afterwards, while I was watching, the received e-mail count started decreasing. Outlook Express deleted all the mail in front of my eyes, and none of it went into the Deleted Items folder. I did a search for all Outlook Express dbx files, and the only ones on the system were the one's I had just set up, and all of those were now empty - 600 e-mails, just gone! The user was none too happy (I had just received 40 new mails, which were also deleted), so I tried another tack. Concerned that the system had somehow become corrupted, I reformated the hard drive and re-installed XP from the manufacturer restore disks. I repeated the import procedure, set up and tested the account, and exactly the same thing happened!
This weekend, my brother, a programmer (so not a slouch on the computer) set up Outlook Express on his PC (another XP machine), and had exactly the same thing happen to him.
Is there a major bug in Outlook Express here, or can anyone offer any other suggestions? Any help will be gratefully received!
