I have several pop3 email accounts set up in Outlook Express 6. Often, I find that the incoming POP3 Server name becomes set to "localhost" and the Account Name for this account has a forward slash followed by the correct incoming server name appended to it. ie. pop.ukgateway.net becomes localhost, and *****@ukgateway.net becomes *****@ukgateway.net/pop.ukgateway.net. When this change takes place, Outlook Express can no longer send or recieve my emails from these accounts. I recieve the following error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.ukgateway.net', Server: 'localhost', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Any advice on how to stop this happening and why it does at all will be most appreciated.

This is an interesting issue because it just happened to me recently as well. However for me instead of local host it listed the IP address instead.

So I had the same problem of the download timing out in mid stream. Once I reset the pop server to the right place it worked fine.

I am researching this one. If I find something I will let you know. joegz

Yes, simply retyping the correct server name corrects the problem for a while. It seems to be on reboot that the server name is changed.

I wondered maybe whether it was something to do with Windows 2000 Internet Information Services which I have running.

Just some more thoughts...

If you look at the microsoft knowledgebase: support.microsoft.com, you'll see that the PC-cillin antivirus software often causes this exact problem. There's supposed to be a pop3 filtering setting you can disable to correct it, but it seems to me that would defeat the purpose of the software. If you're using PC-cillin, you might try another brand of anti-virus.

A pal of mine had the same problem but with Norton anti-virus. When he installed it the darn thing changed his POP3 server to localhost.

Very strange.

Yeah I was using PC-Cillin at the time, but since then had reformatted and not bothered to put the virus scanner back on and the problem had not occured again.

Thanks anyway though, at least I'll know for next time.
