I have a 56K dial up connection but it also comes with a 2 hour drop e.g. every 2 hours my system has to redial to regain a connection because my ISP has drop'd the original connection. The problem is that if I wish to send and email which takes longer to send than 2 hours the ISP will drop the connection. XP will automatically re-dial for a new connection but Outlook Express will start sending the email from scratch! Hence the email never goes anywhere.

Does anybody know of a (prefferably FREE) package or software bolt-on, for Outlook Express, to enable it to continue its down load from where it left off after suffering a 2 hour drop?

Thanks - Gerald

I would use something like yahoo groups (or similar) to do mass email - it then only takes the time for 1 email, and yahoo send out all the others

have you checked your own dialup settings? the default idle time hang up is 120minutes isn't it? then have auto reconnect... it might be your own doing unknowingly

I don't think outlook sending is considered activity.

the 2 hour drop is caused by Juno/Netzero, and is hardcoded - it doesn't matter what you are doing, Juno/Netzero drops the line

He doesn't specify that he's using juno/netzero tho.

If your attachments are that large and there is no addition, you could split them up with winrar or something and make multiple sends

I cant send in multiple emails for sending things like photos via email for developing! If I do send then in 2 halves then I will get charged postage & packaging twice - would then be cheaper to pop down the local shop in the car! (Madness)

If my windows system is updating from Microsoft and my ISP 2 hour drop comes in then that continues from where it left off so why cant my email sending and recieveing?

What is Juno/Netzero? I have a standard dial up connection with NTL. Its just that as it's unmetered they drop the connection on me every 2 hours to try and push me off if I am not using the thing. Its part of the connection contract - but hey its only £10GBP per month!

Juno is an ISP (in the US I think)

What he means is that when he is transferring an email, using Outlook Express, if the connection to his ISP is lost, for what ever reason (in this case a limited connection time of 2hrs), he wants the transfer to continue.

When you talk about Windows update, that is the update software re-connecting to Microsoft's website, and saying "I want to get this file starting at this position".

I don't think this is actually possible, because it is your mail server (hotmail/Yahoo) that you need to reconnect to to continue the transfer, and not outlook. In this case, I don't think they do have any facility to do this, unfortunately, sorry!

Hope this helps :-(

From the OE Help file:

To send large messages

With Outlook Express, you can send large messages or files to e-mail servers that have size limits, by breaking the messages into smaller ones. When the group of messages is received, the e-mail program combines them into one message.

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
On either the Mail or News tab, click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, select the Break apart messages larger than x KB check box and then enter the maximum file size the server will allow.

In your case, parts will go through, and after disconnect the rest will pick up so eventually it will all get there and reassemble itself.
Do some test with smaller ones before sending a really large one. Make the limit rediculously low to test.

That said, if it takes you more than 2 hours to send it, by that time you would have gone to the shop, wait for development and be back home ;-)

Never seen that Marc, Well done!!

I would presume it would depend on what email client the other person is using though, becuas eif it's something other than OE, it may not combine the email into one.

Works for OE and Outlook.
The other, don't really know, that is why I suggest a smaller test first.

wtg marc, Just like a newsgroup piece. makes perfect sense!

Haha, thanks, I've got those moments now and then ;-)

Thank you Marcs. I have not tested it yet but have every reason to believe you have solved my problem. I have changed my email settings and will be interested to see what happens.
