Running Windows 2003 servers with 25+ users logging in via Terminal services. All local computers are XP pro. Every night at 1:00 to 1:02am 3 users ( if they are logged into sessions ) get a message stating that they have lost connection to the exchange server. It has a little login screen asking for the exhange server's administrator account password. Since the users don't know that they log out and back in and everything is back to normal. I've checked their time restrictions via AD and found they have 24 hour access to the domain, I've looked in the event viewer on both the exchange server and the server running TS with no troubling events around 1:00am... Anyone have any ideas what could cause this or how to troubleshoot it? It has been going on now for about a month and I'm at my wits end trying to figure out a solution.

Have you checked the event logs on the server and clients?

Yes, and no errors around the time of the problem.

What sort of backup are you using? If your backup software is using a snapshot of somekind it may stop/slow the Exchange DB for a short while to complete the snapshot.

Normally this should be transparent but if you have a very large DB it could take long enough to cause the broken connection.

Alternatly if you have a disk imaging package it may be setup to stop Exchaneg services during an update to the image.

Using Backup Exec version 10D... Exchange Database varies between 6 - 10GB...and and far as a snapshot ...yes I get this message in the log :

AOFO: Started for resource: "\\SERVER-EXC1\Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
The following volumes are dependent on resource: "C:" .
The snapshot provider used by VSS for volume C: - Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0 (Version 1.0.0.7).

I don't have the open file option installed ( don't know if that would cause problems? ) Or maybe I can turn shadow copy off? I'll try out more things tonight and see if the situation changes
